Jimmy Smith (Eminem), per gli amici B-Rabbit, vive in una vecchia baracca sulla 8 Mile, una strada di Detroit che separa il quartiere bianco da quello nero. Jimmy è un ragazzo serio, ma con una difficile situazione familiare: la madre Stephanie (Kim Basinger) è alcolizzata, mentre Greg, il fidanzato di lei, è un uomo detestabile. Il giovane cerca di prendersi cura meglio che può della sorellina Lily, verso la quale è molto protettivo.
Il sogno di Jimmy è di diventare un rapper famoso e vincere le gare di freestyle, ma la sua timidezza, unita al fatto che in queste sfide è l’unico bianco a scontrarsi con i neri, non gli permettono di dimostrare quello che è capace di fare. Spinto dagli amici, decide comunque di provarci partecipando alla sua prima gara allo Shelter, un circolo dove si sfidano gli aspiranti rapper, ma rimane muto e lascia il palco umiliato.
Anche nella fabbrica dove lavora le cose non vanno bene: a causa dei suoi continui ritardi, il suo supervisore non gli concede i turni extra che aveva chiesto per poter arrotondare. Quei soldi gli servono ancora di più, dopo che la madre ha ricevuto lo sfratto ed è stata lasciata da Greg.
Nel frattempo, Jimmy conosce e s’innamora di Alex (Brittany Murphy), una ragazza problematica che non si fa scrupoli a scendere a compromessi per sfondare nel mondo dello spettacolo. Tutta questa complicata situazione lo fa riflettere e capisce che vuole combattere per cambiare le cose.
Carico e arrabbiato, scrive, inventa rime, crea canzoni. Ora è pronto per salire sul palco e prendersi la sua rivincita…
