Even before John Mayall, Alexis Korner was the godfather of the British blues boom of the 1960s. By the mid-'60s, Korner had already amassed a considerable body of work with several different ensembles, but this anthology picks up the Korner story in 1967, when he still had plenty of history yet to make. Classic-rock aficionados will be captivated by early recordings of Korner cohorts like Robert Plant (lending his pre-Zeppelin wail to "Operator" and "Steal Away") and Keith Richards (an idiosyncratic reworking of the Stones' "Get Off My Cloud"). Later tracks find Korner being honored by his disciples (see Eric Clapton's six-string contribution to "Hey Pretty Mama," for one), who might have surpassed the old master in fame, but not in straight-up soul. Recorded between 1967 and 1982.
