Alicia de Larrocha
is not only an extraordinary pianist, she is also a much admired humanitarian, one of the most sympathetic musical figures of all time. While she made many Spanish works by Granados, Turina and de Falla her signature pieces (some Spanish composers wrote specifically for her), she shines here as a superb interpreter of Mozart's delightful and demanding piano concertos.
Number 20 is famous for it's grand introduction but number 25 is sparkling with fast, silvery passages.
Both carry Mozart's trademark sweetness and ability to convey happiness to the listener. De Larrocha plays with such obvious affection for the music, the composer himself would not wish for anything better. Her impeccable technique combined with masterful sensitivity gives these familiar pieces a fresh and even spontaneous feel. Sir Colin Davis is one of our under-appreciated conductors.
He is able to approach Mozart in completely different way than Sibelius and yet still have a new word to say about Verdi's "Un Ballo". Here he focuses on carrying a brisk dialogue with the piano, perfectly attuned to the composer's moods, which would often change from reflecting melancholy to unrestrained joy. Allegretto in No. 25 comes across much like a folk dance, played lightly and sure-handedly at the same time.
BMG Classics has done a great job with digital engineering; the piano has a deep yet bright sound with none of the dullness so common for older recordings, and the orchestra never seems as a separate unit. This is an ideal recording, guaranteed to provide the listener with many wonderful moments.
