AllMusic Review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine
Comedy records are rarely funny on repeated listens, which is certainly a problem with Rhino's four-disc American Comedy Box. Attempting to give an oral history of comedy by arranging the set into distinct sections (standup comedy, sketches, etc.), the box samples all of the different varieties of comedy albums, as well as many of the major comedians. However, the number of different comedians prevents the box from achieving a sense of rhythm, and most of the bits are simply not very funny. And to top it off, the liner notes are printed on newspaper. Maybe that was a funny joke to the producers, but it certainly seems like a rip-off for a box that retails for over fifty dollars.
