Some bands blow tour budgets on laser-shooting guitars and flashy pyrotechnics; Black Label Society spend their presumably much smaller budget on a giant banner that hangs in front of the stage to hide their shy roadies during the changeover. Such frugality often leads to disappointment – but not when the man throwing the party is Zakk Wylde.
Black Label Society played a solid ninety minute set, featuring several tracks from their latest album, Catacombs of the Black Vatican.

If lengthy guitar solos are your personal preference then you can’t help but worship Zakk Wylde.
The set was broken up with a stunning rendition of “Angel of Mercy” where Dario Lorina swapped his guitar for keyboards. Beautiful. Zakk Wylde then displayed his own piano prowess with an almost classical piano solo before slickly moving into “In This River”. The speaker stacks were swathed in two huge photos of Dimebag Darrell, adding a poignant moment to proceedings.

Black Label Society ended their fourteen song set with “Stillborn”

With ears ringing (for nearly three days after in my case) and a hint of “Flower of Scotland” in the air, the Glasgow chapter of the Black Label Society went home happy.
