Summary:

Inspector Sylvester is assigned to investigate the violent murder of a fashion house model Isabella, by a masked assailant. As the investigation proceeds all of the house’s various sins, including corruption, abortions, blackmail and drug addiction, begin to come to light. It turns out that Isabella had kept a diary detailing these vices, and now almost every employee becomes nervous.

Note : This proto-slasher wasn't the very first giallo (that was Bava a year before with The Girl Who Knew Too Much), nor was it Bava's first film in color (vaguely BDSM-themed gothic horror The Whip and the Body, also from 1963, which we'll get back to soon), but this was the film that really established the main giallo conventions: Black-gloved, trenchcoated killer, lurid color, graphics kills (for the time), nudity (very moderate), and lots of red herrings, dark secrets, and twists. It's the giallo for me, with its influence extremely clear in Argento's best work a decade or even two later.

It's not a very complicated story, a series of models working at a Roman fashion house are stalked and killed by a mysterious masked killer who's looking for a diary with compromising information, and everyone's a suspect. But what a trip it is, the groovy sixties jazz and the psychedelic, dreamlike use of color and light, the sudden bursts of violence, the focus on drug use (here's, it's cocaine that's the big bad). Also, don't miss the amazing intro credits sequence. Again, the use of color in this film is some of the best in the history of cinema.

This restored version is basically perfect, the color is saturated and velvety, the grain present but not overwhelming, completely clean with good contrast and nice blacks. The sound is good too, as usual I'd recommed watching this is Italian with subtitles, as the voice acting in the English dub is... Shatnerian at times, and the commentary track is informative. 10/10 for content quality.
