L'impacciato Brad (Ben Stiller), determinato a incoraggiare il talento musicale del figlio Troy, si mette alla febbricitante ricerca di un istituto prestigioso che riconosca le capacità dell'adolescente. Craig (Michael Sheen) scrive romanzi best seller, Jason (Luke Wilson) ha fatto gli investimenti giusti, Billy (Jemaine Clement) passa le giornate in spiaggia circondato da donnine in bikini: al confronto la modesta carriera di Brad impallidisce. Denaro, potere, successo, sono questi i parametri per misurare la posizione di un uomo? Riuscire a ottenere un tavolo non riservato in un costoso ristorante di lusso ti colloca in cima alla scala sociale? Domande come queste porteranno a risultati catastrofici per Brad ma probabilmente esilaranti per il pubblico.
The clumsy Brad (Ben Stiller), determined to encourage the musical talent of his son Troy, sets off to the feverish search for a prestigious institute that recognizes the abilities of the adolescent. During the trip, the man thinks back to the old classmates, developing a morbid obsession with the so-called "status" of the latter. Craig (Michael Sheen) writes best-selling novels, Jason (Luke Wilson) has made the right investments, Billy (Jemaine Clement) spends days on the beach surrounded by little women in a bikini: Brad's modest career pales in comparison. Money, power, success, are these the parameters for measuring a man's position? Are you able to get a non-reserved table in an expensive luxury restaurant at the top of the social ladder? Questions such as these will lead to catastrophic results for Brad but probably hilarious to the public.
