Note : Every once in a while, Hollywood gets the bright idea to make an "erotic thriller", which on paper should be an easy sell, it's exciting and suspenseful, but, here's the kicker, it's also horny! Should sell like hotcakes. It rarely works out that way, with most being either middle of the road thrillers with faintly ridiculous sex scenes, or tipping over into bad softcore porn. Paul Schrader's remake of the 1942 shapeshifter horror Cat People is better than most, though, taking a horror movie premise and adding plenty of sex and nudity, incestuous desires, and a sort of serial-killer subplot. It also has some nice nods to the original, including a Lewton bus and a near copy of the swimming pool scene, but with boobs. The cast is solid, Malcolm McDowell is creepy and weird, Nastassja Kinski is a fairly convincing naïf, John Heard is down to earth and reliable, and Anette O'Toole is smoking hot and undeservedly ignored. There's also a small appearance by Frankie Faison, commissioner Burrell from The Wire, who's alway appreciated, and the soundtrack is composed by Giorgio Moroder and has vocals by David Bowie, which has to be some sort of 80s film music jackpot.

Irena Gallier arrives in New Orleans from Canada to reconnect with her brother Paul. The two were separated in the foster system, and Paul spent his childhood in psychiatric hospitals. Arriving, she finds that Paul is some sort of preacher and lives with a housekeeper named "Female". In the meantime, a prostitute going to a motel to meet a john finds a black leopard waiting for her in the room, and Oliver and Alice from the NOLA zoo get called in to capture it. Irena finds her brother mysteriously missing, and goes sightseeing on her own, ending up in the zoo, where she is fascinated with the newly captured leopard, stays after hours, and meets Oliver, who invites her for dinner and offers her a job at the zoo's gift shop. Later, after the leopard kills one of the zoo employees, Oliver resolves to euthanize it, only to find it mysteriously missing from its cage. Paul shows back up at the house and makes sexual advances at Irena, who runs away and talks to the police, who in turn investigate the house after a police dog picks up a scent. They find dead bodies in the basement and conclude Paul is a serial killer. However, the truth is far stranger, as it turns out Paul and Irena are shapeshifters who turn into big cats after having sex, and can only turn human again by killing...

This brand new 4k remaster looks great, good contrast, nice black levels, excellent color, and the sound is very good too. I think it might be a little bit on the dark side, even for as noir-looking a movie as this, but all in all, it's excellent. The commentary track with the director is also good, and talks quite a bit about the process of remaking the film and the connections to the original.
