Tra le trasposizioni dai romanzi di Stephen King, questa approntata da Lewis Teague (un piccolo aficionado dello scrittore del Maine, visto che dirigerà anche L’occhio del gatto) è una di
quelle che cade nel mezzo. Né troppo buona, né troppo orrenda. Nonostante i diversi sforzi di sceneggiatura e l’impegno degli attori domina per tutto il film una tranquilla aria di
mediocrità televisiva, da cui si salva parzialmente solo l’ultimo quarto d’ora a base di ferocia canina. La storia è abbastanza nota e a conti fatti altro non è che il consueto meccanismo
di King, cioè quello di calare un elemento malefico, nella tranquilla e sonnolenta provincia americana, facendo in qualche modo detonare anche i piccoli vizi nascosti delle famiglie in
apparenza felici.

Tuttavia, in una soleggiata giornata di giugno del 1980 (l'anno in cui si svolge il romanzo), inseguendo un coniglio selvatico, Cujo si ritrova con la testa incastrata in una piccola
caverna infestata dai pipistrelli, e da uno di questi viene morso, contraendo così la rabbia e trasformandosi in un mostro aggressivo. Arriva ad attaccare ed uccidere Joe Camber ed il suo
vicino Gary Pervier. Il figlio e la moglie di Joe sono lontani da casa per far visita ad alcuni parenti...........
