De shopaholic Crystal krijgt van haar ouders een ultimatum voorgelegd: verander je onverantwoordelijk gedrag voor de Kerst of je krijgt geen cent meer. Crystal heeft geen baan en geen romantische vooruitzichten en weet niet wat te doen. Dan vindt ze een brief van de zevenjarige Olivia gericht aan de kerstman, waarin ze vraagt om een nieuwe vrouw voor haar vader Derek, een weduwnaar. Crystal spoort hen op en laat haar goede kant zien door vrijwilligerswerk te verrichten in de gaarkeuken van Derek. De enige die in de weg staat tussen haar en haar pas ontdekte geluk is Dereks jaloerse vriendin.
