English Orpheus Compilation [c17-18] (Hyperion) [MP3] [twistle]
"The English Orpheus" is a (long) series of releases on the Hyperion label devoted to English Baroque music. This CD is a collection of diverse excerpts from the other discs in the series, and contains some really marvellous music.
Its quite wrong that so much of this repetoire should be so poorly known: most know of nothing beyond Purcell and perhaps Arne but, as this series shows, there is a lot of high quality music by a myriad of composers from that period (and, lets be fair, some absolute garbage too).
