Eno-Cale-Wrong Way Up (melodic prog-electronica from 1990) EAC FLAC

This was basically an impulse purchase that was inspired by a review on one of the Amazon threads. I was looking for something new, a bit off the beaten track and am familiar with Enos work in Roxy Music, U2, Talking Heads and thought this looked interesting. I had heard a couple of The Velvet Undergrounds albums and thought that this combination of Eno and Cale would be worth investigating.

Upon first listen I immediately thought I had had wasted my money, that this was just a lightweight pop album. Wrong!! The more I listened the better it got. For a start the singing on this album is not the work of opera stars, or the worlds greatest voices, but what the two uber talents have done is to have layers of harmony going on to fill out the sound, multitracking themselves so that they sound like 3-4 folk singing together like a mini choir. It is an absolute pleasure to listen to. The lyrics are witty, world weary in places, concise and interesting, all delivered in super catchy melody lines. Eno and Cale take turns at doing lead vocals and it is interesting hearing how each approach the song in hand.

The instrumentation is unusual in places, but as per the rest of the thought and effort put into this hook laden album all working towards a most pleasurable end.

So, overall a great pleasant easy listening album, amongst the catchiest I have heard in a long time, that will stick in the mind long after the stereo has gone silent. (Amazon Review)
