Edward Riley Boyd, conosciuto come Eddie Boyd, nacque il 25 novembre 1914 a Clarksdale, Mississippi. È stato uno dei grandi pianisti blues e compositore di grandi successi come "Five Long Years" e "24 Hours".
Iniziò la sua carriera a Chicago, dove si trasferì nel 1941 dopo aver suonato (dal 1936) nel distretto di Beale Street a Memphis, quartiere famoso per la concentrazione di locali con musica blues e jazz dal vivo.
A Chicago collaborò con Sonny Boy Williamson II, Jazz Gillum e Tampa Red, e nel 1947 registrò il suo debutto solista.
Nel 1953 passò alla leggendaria etichetta Chess Records, per la quale registrò i suoi successi più famosi ("24 Hours" e "Third Degree", quest'ultima scritta a quattro mani con Willie Dixon).
Nel 1965 girò l'Europa insieme a Buddy Guy nel American Folk Blues Festival, e successivamente collaborò con i Fleetwood Mac e John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers.
La visita in Europa lo colpì molto, e, stanco dell'odio razziale presente negli Stati Uniti, decise di trasferirsi in Belgio.
Pochi anni dopo andò in Finlandia, dove continuò ad esibirsi fino alla sua morte, avvenuta il 13 luglio 1994.
