The immediate postwar years of 1945 and 1946 found the American left deeply divided by the bitter debates which had preceded World War II and in retreat before the conservative resurgence of the war years. The left remained, nevertheless, a large, diverse, and potentially powerful movement, with a mass base in the left-led CIO trade unions, with articulate spokesmen within the intellectual community, and with access to the government through Secretary of Commerce Henry Wallace and other old New Dealers. The growing tensions between the United States and the Soviet Union and the emergence of anti-Communist politics at home, however, would soon destroy the old left and produce in its place a new liberalism sharply different in both tone and content from the liberalism of the 1930s.

This study is an examination of the response of the left, especially liberals, to the Cold War and to the anti-Communist politics of America's second great Red Scare.
