During the past decade or so, when speaking of Chinese outside China, th ewords "Chinese" and "diaspora " in Anglophone literature have been linke dlike conjoined twins , coexisting by necessity and har d t o separate withou trisking injury to the other. Another way of looking at it is that the process of"Chinese immigration" has practically given way to a seemingly open-ended ,circulatory movement called the "Chinese diaspora," the "Chinese immigrant"and even the "ethnic Chinese" rendered as "diasporic Chinese" or as "Chinesein the diaspora," while the well-worn term "overseas Chinese" seems hopelesslyold-fashioned. Whe n exactl y the notio n o f the Chines e diaspor a was firs tarticulated and by whom is not clear, but it was used as early as 1960, whenUniversity of Chicago-trained Chines e American sociologist Rose Hum Le edescribed Chinatowns as "communities in diaspora" (Lee 1960). In that samedecade, the eminent China scholar Maurice Freedman of the London Schoolof Economics and Political Science, in his seminal piece on Chinese voluntaryassociations in nineteenth-century Singapore , also alluded t o the Chines ediaspora (Freedma n 1967) .
