Summary:

In 1957, Dorothy and Edmund Yates (Keith and Rupert Davies) were committed to an institution for the criminally insane, she for acts of murder and cannibalism and he for covering up her crimes. Fifteen years later, they are pronounced fit for society and released. However, in Dorothy's case the doctors may have jumped the gun a bit. Edmund and eldest daughter, Jackie (Deborah Fairfax), try to discover just how far Mother's bloodlust has taken her. Meanwhile, youngest daughter Debbie (Kim Butcher) begins to explore the crazy roots of her family tree as fully as possible.

Note : Most of the older British horror I've done so far has been kind of stylish, gothic Hammer stuff, but now for something completely different, the closest thing I've seen to a British 70s exploitaiton/giallo type film, and it's honestly not bad, with family madness, gory kills (for the time), sneaking suspicions, and a downer ending. Performances are solid, and I'm amused that the remaster proudly retains the X ratings certificate before the opening credits.

Dorothy and Edmund Yates are an elderly couple who have just been released from an institution for the criminally insane to which they were sent after Dorothy killed and cannibalized several people. Edmund has dementia, and Jackie, Edmund's daughter from a previous marriage, brings the couple animal brains to assuage Dorothy's murderous urges. However, Jackie younger half sister Debbie takes after her mother, and is becoming more unhinged, and it seems like Dorothy is in the process of a relapse, working as a "tarot card reader" whose sessions often end in murder. Things spiral out of control as Jackie gradually discovers the truth about her parents' crimes 15 years earlier.

This is a pretty decent remaster, not entirely clean, but nice controlled grain, good color and contrast, and a sharp but not oversharpened image. Stereo track sounds good, commentary track is quite interesting.

HeVK torrents always have lots of keywords. Try searching for “hevk exploitation” for more from unsavory audiovisual spectacle, “hevk serial killer” for more murders one after the other, or “hevk 70s” for more from the decade when lurid subject matter became very popular.
