Low Country Blues is a collection of blues classics recorded by Gregg Allman and released in January, 2011. His first album in 14 years, Low Country Blues gets Allman back to the roots he and brother Duane shared as they set out from Macon, Ga., on the unpredictable adventure that became the Allman Brothers Band. This stripped-down collection of covers (and one Allman original) was produced by T-Bone Burnett, who seems to possess an inexhaustible appetite for interesting settings that push established musicians past their comfort zones.
This recording brought together a list of extraordinary musicians, which includes Jay Bellerose on drums, Dennis Crouch on upright bass, Doyle Bramhall II on guitar and Allman’s old friend Dr John on piano.
Suffering from chronic Hepatitis C, Allman was on a waiting list for two years for a liver donor. The album was recorded just 6 months before his transplant, and is proof that music is an extremely powerful source of positive energy. Allman is unquestionably an experienced natural interpreter of the blues genre and a survivor having endured several of life’s tragedies.
Gregg Allman was inducted with the Allman Brothers Band into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1995 and received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Georgia Music Hall of Fame in 2006. The band has often been credited with originating the Southern Rock genre, combining the blues and southern barrel-house style country rock sound with hard hitting rock n roll. His distinctive voice placed him in 70th in the Rolling Stone list of the "100 Greatest Singers of All Time".
