Throughout Henry Threadgill's long music career he has had several bands which
have developed over long periods of time: Air, Very, Very Circus, Make a Move
and Zooid. Although most of Mr. Threadgill's recorded output features evolving
versions of these ensembles, he often brings in guests musicians or organizes
something completely different: like his Dance Orchestra which remains
unrecorded. For this distinguished new project, Mr. Threadgill has organized a
unique double ensemble with two pianists (Jason Moran & David Virelles), two
alto saxists (Roman Filiu & Curtis MacDonald, as well as two members of Zooid:
Chris Hoffman & Jose Davilla. And for something completely different,
Mr. Threadgill does not play his trusty sax or flute, he directs the ensemble
to play his new music. This disc is dedicated to the late Butch Morris, the
famed conductor and close friend of Mr. Threadgill's who passed away in January
of 2013.
Although this is a seven piece ensemble, it starts quite sparse and
suspense-filled. When the saxes enter, it is as if we have entered a spirited
new domain. Since there is no bassist involved, the tuba and/or the cello
switch off between the bass lines when they are not soloing. There are a series
of shifting duos going on throughout: cello & sax, piano & sax, piano &
drums... not very far removed from the way Zooid would repeat and develop lines
over a long stretch. Both pianists and both saxists are fine soloists and each
gets their chance to stretch out as the double rhythm team shifts gears in a
tight, infectious way. There are numerous sections of exquisite and expressive
unaccompanied piano, as well as thoughtful chamber harmonies for all the
members. Overall this is a magnificent achievement, one that will take several
listening s to absorb all of it many wonders. Absolutely stunning!
