Nella preistorico-moderna città di Bedrock, Fred Flinstone ha regalato i suoi risparmi all'amico Barney, sposato con Betty, perché possa adottare Bamm-Bamm, un frugoletto alquanto turbolento. Per sdebitarsi, al concorso per un posto di dirigente nella Slate, l'impresa mineraria locale, Barney sostituisce con le sue risposte al test di Fred che viene nominato vice-presidente. Ma Rocco Detritis, disonesto manager, con la complicità dell'avvenente segretaria Ambra Crystal, gli fa firmare una serie di provvedimenti che causano il licenziamento dei suoi ex colleghi, tra i quali Barney, nonché lo coinvolgono nella truffa di una lottizzazione fantasma i cui proventi verranno intascati da Rocco. Inoltre Barney, ridotto a fare il cameriere mentre Fred esibisce un lusso sfrenato, gli rinfaccia lo scambio dei test, e i due litigano. Wilma, la moglie di Fred, che ha mantenuto i rapporti con Betty, lascia infuriata la casa per tornare dalla madre, Pearl Slaghoople, che odia Fred e ne è cordialmente ricambiata. Quanto al genere, che ha scoperto troppo tardi l'imbroglio di Rocco e Ambra, ed è costretto a sfuggire all'arresto, deve difendersi anche dagli ex colleghi infuriati che vogliono impiccare sia lui che Barney, trovatosi nei pressi a vender gelati.
