"I racconti dello zio Tom" (Song of the South) è ambientato in Georgia durante l'Era della Ricostruzione, il periodo della storia americana immediatamente successivo alla Guerra di Secessione. Il protagonista è il piccolo Johnny (Bobby Driscoll), che si trasferisce nella piantagione della nonna insieme alla madre, separandosi per un certo periodo dal padre che lavora come giornalista ad Atlanta. Ad aiutarlo ad affrontare questa difficile situazione familiare è proprio il saggio e carismatico zio Tom (Uncle Remus), un ex schiavo nero, che grazie alle sue storie di Fratel Coniglietto diventerà una figura di riferimento per il bambino. I tre segmenti animati, con le loro argute morali, svolgeranno un ruolo fondamentale nella vicenda, rivelandosi a dir poco formative per Johnny.
