La vita di Sophie, una semplice ragazza, viene sconvolta dall'incontro con un misterioso individuo e, in seguito, da un maleficio scagliatole dalla malvagia Strega delle Lande, che la trasforma in una vecchietta; è cosi costretta ad andare via di casa a causa delle nuove sembianze.
Young Sophie Hatter is a responsible and beautiful girl, though she does not perceive herself as such, runs her late father's hat shop. When on her way to the bakery to visit her sister, Lettie, she encounters by chance the mysterious wizard Howl, who takes a liking to her.
