Nato alla fine del XIV secolo nella città tedesca di Magonza, in un ambiente ancora medievale, Gutenberg ebbe grande spirito d’iniziativa, uno straordinario intuito e senso degli affari. Resosi conto del fermento culturale che la società dell’epoca stava attraversando, intuì che trovare un modo veloce ed economico per ottenere copie dei testi era una necessità sempre più incombente.
Il filmato,ricco di ricostruzioni in costume, ricrea l’atmosfera delle città tedesche del XV secolo, ripercorrendo la vita dell’inventore: dall’infanzia a Magonza, agli anni di Strasburgo, fino alle controversie con il banchiere Fust, che prima finanziò Gutenberg e poi si appropriò della sua invenzione. La stampa a caratteri mobili rappresentò una vera e propria rivoluzione, fondamentale per la rinascita culturale dell’Europa cinquecentesca.
