Summary:

With the disappearance of hack horror writer Sutter Cane, all Hell is breaking loose...literally! Author Cane, it seems, has a knack for description that really brings his evil creepy-crawlies to life. Insurance investigator John Trent is sent to investigate Cane's mysterious vanishing act and ends up in the sleepy little East Coast town of Hobb's End.

In the Mouth of Madness (1994), directed by John Carpenter, Shout! Factory 4k remaster, encoded in 10 bit HEVC with AAC sound, including 5.1 remaster, two commentary tracks, and subtitles in six languages.

Note : Possibly the last truly great Carpenter movie, sadly, but at least it's a worthy end to his period of unbroken greatness, a metatextual romp that's got a lot to say about horror, the nature of fiction, and fandom, man, and it's not afraid to get weird. Carried by an as usual great Sam Neill performance, it mixes Lovecraftian horror with a look at 80s horror superstardom such as was enjoyed by Stephen King and, well, Carpenter himself. Also the third in Carpenter's loose "Apocalypse Trilogy", along with The Thing and Prince of Darkness, and the only one of the three that actually shows, at least partially, the actual end of the world that the other two only implied.

Sam Neill plays John Trent, an insurance investigator who's sent off to investigate a publisher's claim that their bestselling horror author Sutter Cane has gone mysteriously missing. Cane is a recluse who only communicated through his agent, who inexplicably went on a murderous rampage, and the publisher want their star back, as well as the manuscript for Cane's latest book, "In the Mouth of Madness". As Trent finds clues to Cane's whereabouts and a map to Hobb's End, the small New England town that's the setting of Cane's books, reality and fiction start to blur, and the readers of Cane's books seem to be slowly losing their minds all over the country.

Again a very good looking 4k remaster of Carpenter's films, this one from Shout! Factory, with good color, moderate grain, and excellent contrast and detail. The 5.1 remaster sounds great too, and the two commentary tracks are, as usual with Carpenter, both interesting and entertaining.
