Description

Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978), directed by Philip Kaufman, Capelight Pictures 4k remaster, encoded in 10 bit HEVC with AAC sound, including 5.1 remaster, original theatrical stereo, director's commentary track, and subtitles in English and German.

IMDb : https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0077745/

Video encoded in two-pass 13.0 Mbps x265 10bit with the veryslow preset for archive quality image. Audio encoded separately with Apple AAC for the highest-quality AAC sound available. Subtitles converted to VobSub and repositioned.

Note : One of the few remakes to surpass the original, this paranoid sci-fi horror is a classic in its own right, a lamentation for the lost San Francisco counterculture scene and indictment of consumerism and conformism which also seems to say that falling in line and becoming part of what you hate is inevitable in the end. The (sparingly used) practical effects are great, the cinematography always interesting, sometimes striking, and the performances pitch-perfect from an extremely strong cast including Donald Sutherland, Brooke Adams, Veronica Cartwright, Jeff Goldblum, Leonard Nimoy, and Art Hindle. It's the culmination of the paranoid 70s conspiracy thriller as science fiction body horror, and it's pretty great. Makes an interesting double feature with The Thing, I think, curiously another doppelganger-horror that's also a remake that's arguably better than the original.

An alien plant lands on earth and starts growing into strange flowers and seed pods. Elizabeth, who works at the San Francisco health department, brings a flower home, and the next day, her boyfriend is acting strange, and she suspects he's been somehow replaced with a double. She confides in her colleague Matthew, who suggests she talk to his psychiatrist friend David, however, on their way to see him, they witness a frantic man being killed in a hit and run accident, surrounded by strangely unemotional bystanders. David reassures Elizabeth and another woman who strangely has similar suspicions about her partner. Matthew's friend Jack calls Matthew to help when he and his wife come across a strange, half-formed body in their spa, and Elizabeth and Matthew start to suspect something much bigger is afoot.

This is a quite good 4k remaster. The grain was a bit prominent, so I applied a very moderate grain reduction, but otherwise it has good contrast, color, and detail, and is generally as good as it gets. 5.1 remaster sounds great, original stereo is good too, and the director's commentary is interesting.
