Het verhaal van 'Invictus' speelt zich af na de val van het Apartheidregime, tijdens de periode dat Zuid-Afrika het wereldkampioenschap rugby organiseerde in 1995. Nelson Mandela (Morgan Freeman) is net bezig aan zijn eerste termijn als president en gebruikt het evenement om decennia van wantrouwen en haat tussen de blanken en zwarten in Zuid-Afrika te beëindigen. Hierbij krijgt Mandela hulp van Francois Pienaar (Matt Damon), de aanvoerder van het Zuid-Afrikaanse rugby team.
