Adattamento dell'omonimo romanzo di Stephen King, IT si incentra sulla prima parte del racconto, ambientata negli anni 80. Il palloncino rosso che galleggia a mezz'aria è il biglietto da visita di una misteriosa entità demoniaca che tormenta i ragazzini di Derry, attirandoli in una trappola mortale senza vie di scampo. Nell'immaginaria cittadina del Maine dove la gente scompare senza motivo, l'ennesima vittima è un bambino di sette anni di nome George, risucchiato in un tombino durante un temporale. Un gruppo di ragazzini perseguitati dai bulli per diverse ragioni, si riunisce sotto la denominazione di Club dei Perdenti per indagare sul mistero della morte di George e degli altri ragazzi scomparsi. Leader dei Perdenti è il giovane Bill Denbrough (Jaeden Lieberher), fratello maggiore dell'ultima vittima, attanagliato dai sensi di colpa per non aver impedito il brutale assassinio. Al suo fianco, bersagli naturali dei prepotenti per indole, aspetto o condizioni economiche, ci sono il grassoccio Ben (Jeremy Ray Taylor), l'impulsivo Richie (Finn Wolfhard), il pragamatico Stan (Wyatt Oleff), l'appassionato di storia Mike (Chosen Jacobs), l'ipocondriaco Eddie (Jack Dylan Grazer) e l'unica ragazza della banda Beverly (Sophia Lillis). Quando la ricerca li conduce a un clown sadico e maligno chiamato Pennywise (Bill Skarsgård), ciascuno dei coraggiosi componenti del neonato Club si rende conto di averlo già incontrato prima.
