Il giovane e brillante tennista Guy Haines si è separato dalla fedifraga consorte Miriam e, in attesa del divorzio, frequenta la bella figlia di un senatore, con la quale conta di risposarsi. Recandosi in treno da Miriam per discutere del divorzio, incontra uno strano individuo, Bruno Anthony, un ricco giovane che ha però problemi col padre, despota odioso. Il ragazzo si dichiara suo fan, dimostrandosi molto ben informato sulle vicende non solo sportive di Guy e gli propone uno scambio di delitti: si offre di uccidergli la moglie, ostacolo al suo nuovo legame sentimentale, in cambio dell'omicidio del proprio padre. Guy la considera uno stravagante scherzo e scende alla fermata successiva. Ma quando Bruno viene a sapere che Miriam non vuole concedere il divorzio a Guy, passa all’azione e pretende che l'altro gli ricambi la “cortesia”.
