Litefoot (Gary Paul Davis - born March 1, 1969) is a Native American rapper and the founder of his own Indy record label, Red Vinyl.
Although Litefoot is not the first Native American to perform rap music he is the first to do so while openly acknowledging his indigenous roots, calling his style of hip hop 'Tribalistic Funk'. Litefoot's early recordings were a search to find a mix of hip-hop and his own native culture, coining the term ‘Tribalistic Funk’ based on the parallels of poverty and oppresion between Indian Reservation life and that of Black street life in the USA.
Litefoot has also appeared in Hollywood films, such as The Indian in the Cupboard (1995), Mortal Kombat: Annihilation (1997), Kull the Conqueror (1997), and Adaptation (2002), and several independent films, including 29 Palms (2002); Song Of Hiawatha (1997) as the titular role; and The Pearl (2000). He has also appeared on the television programs: CSI: Miami, Family Law, and Any Day Now.
He has won six Native American Music Awards (Nammys), his most recent for Artist of The Year. Litefoot’s emphasis on a Tribal feel combined with the flavor of rational native beat mixes very well with a contemporary rap beat, it’s a natural. His style creates a very appealing sound, clearly depicting how American Indians walk in two worlds, that of contemporary America while maintaining an underlying spirit of native culture and tradition ever present within.
Litefoot's newest CD, Relentless Pursuit, was released in late 2008 on his own Indy label.
