MARCEL PROUST (1871-1922) was a French novelist, critic, and essayist considered by critics and writers to be one of the most influential authors of the last century.  His style is one of the most original in all literature and is unique in its union of speed and protraction, precision and iridescence, force and enchantment, classicism and symbolism.

Proust is renowned for his monumental À LA RECHERCHE DU TEMPS PERDU (1913-27).  The entire climate of the 20th-century novel was affected by its appearance, one of the truly supreme achievements of modern fiction.  Taking as raw material the author’s past life, its series of novels are ostensibly about the irrecoverability of time lost, about the forfeiture of innocence through experience, the emptiness of love and friendship, the vanity of human endeavour, and the triumph of sin and despair; but Proust’s conclusion is that the life of every day is supremely important, full of moral joy and beauty, which, though they may be lost through faults inherent in human nature, are indestructible and recoverable.

The novels were initially translated into English by C. K. Scott Moncrieff, appearing under the title REMEMBRANCE OF THINGS PAST (1922-31).  Terence Kilmartin revised the Scott Moncrieff translation in 1981, using the new French edition of 1954, but the title IN SEARCH OF LOST TIME, a literal rendering of the French, has gained usage since D.J. Enright adopted it for his revised translation published in 1992 by Modern Library.  In 1995 Penguin undertook a fresh translation by a team of seven different translators overseen by general editor Christopher Prendergast, which were eventually issued in 2002.  Both the Modern Library and Penguin translations provide a detailed plot synopsis at the end of each volume.  The last volume of the Modern Library edition also includes Kilmartin's "Guide to Proust," an index of the novel's characters, persons, places, and themes.

PLEASURES AND DAYS (1896) is a collection of prose poems and novellas.  JEAN SANTEUIL is an unfinished novel written between 1896 and 1900, and published posthumously.  Many of the themes later developed in "À la recherche" find their first articulation in this work, including the enigma of memory and the necessity of reflection, although it is more plainly autobiographical than Proust's later works.  THE LEMOINE AFFAIR is a series of brilliant parodies—of Balzac, Flaubert, Renan, Saint-Simon, and others of Proust’s favourite French authors—through which he endeavoured to purge his style of extraneous influences.

Proust’s enormous correspondence, remarkable for its elegance and nobility of style and thought, is also significant as the raw material from which a great artist built his fictional world.  The letters are also exciting as an unfolding panorama of the Belle Epoque and for their superb insights into literature, art and music.
