Note : It's a rare film that not only creates a whole new genre, but also names it, yet, that's exactly what happened with the infamous Mondo Cane, which gave rise to the mondo film, non-narrative or loosely narrative exploitation documentary films about sensationalistic subjects. Not particularly shocking today (with the possible exception of some of the animal cruelty, of which there is quite a bit, so be warned), frequently quite racist (or at the very least, extremely perpetuating of stereotypes), and in many cases quite wrong or exaggerated in its explanations of what we're seeing, it's still extremely fascinating viewing, at times even quite beautiful, and hinting at an intention to show different aspects of a universal human experience, beneath all the sensationalism.

There's no plot as such, just a series of vignettes that tie into each other by some common theme or association, the unveiling of a statue of Rudolph Valentino in his hometown in Italy, an Italian film star in the US in the 60s who has his shirt torn off by female fans, women in a polyandrous society in New Guinea chasing after men to have sex with them, US sailors chasing girls on the French Riviera, mass slaughter of pigs in New Guinea, a pet cemetery in the US, dogs being served for food in China, and so on. The common themes are sex, death, eating, taboos, rituals and excess. For all its faults, it's kind of mesmerizing, and never boring.

This is a pretty decent looking remaster, a bit flickery, but image quality is otherwise quite good (although it's obvious the original material was never fantastic). Both the original Italian narration as well as the English dub sound fine.
