For Emma Swan, life has been anything but a happy ending. But when she's reunited with Henry - the son she gave up for adoption ten years ago - on the night of her 28th birthday, everything changes. Storybrooke, nel Maine, è una città in cui i personaggi di fiabe vivono come persone normali e sembrano non ricordare la loro vera identità. Solo Henry, un ragazzino di dieci anni e figlio del sindaco, sa tutta la verità e cerca costantemente di risvegliare i loro ricordi.

Per riuscirci andrà a trovare Emma Swan, la sua madre naturale, convincendola a riportarlo a Storybrooke e in seguito a rimanere. Henry è sicuro che lei sia l'unica che può spezzare la maledizione che la regina cattiva di Biancaneve lanciò 28 anni prima su tutto il regno delle fiabe, facendoli precipitare nel mondo reale e togliendo a tutti i loro lieto fine.

Emma accetta perché vede che tra Henry e la madre adottiva, Regina, non c'è il rapporto madre/figlio che sperava di dargli dandolo in adozione. Regina però non è d'accordo con la sua permanenza e le studierà tutte per costringerla a ripartire.
