A 29 anni, la dottoressa Atsuko Chiba è un' attraente ma modesta ricercatrice e psicoterapeuta giapponese, vincitrice del Premio Nobel. Il suo alter-ego, una splendida e coraggiosa ragazza diciottenne, 'detective dei sogni', PAPRIKA il suo nome in codice, è in grado di penetrare nei sogni delle persone e di 'sincronizzarsi' col loro inconscio per aiutarle a scoprire l'origine delle loro ansie e nevrosi. Nel laboratorio dove Atsuko lavora è stato messo a punto un nuovo congegno, il DC-Mini, inventato dal suo brillante collega dottor Tokita, un genio un po' goffo, con evidenti disturbi alimentari. Sebbene il dispositivo possa rivoluzionare il mondo della psicoterapia, in mani sbagliate il potenziale di un suo uso scorretto potrebbe essere devastante, in quanto il congegno permette a chi lo usa di annichilire completamente la personalità dei sognatori nel momento del sonno. Quando uno degli unici quattro prototipi di DC-Mini viene rubato, nella fase conclusiva della ricerca, e contemporaneamente Himuro, l'assistente del dottor Tokita, scompare, Atsuko inizia a sospettare che non si tratti solo di una coincidenza...
