Parsifal - Richard Wagner - Barenboim - Kupfer - Berlin Staatsoper ~ 1992

Excellent production of Wagner's "Bühnenweihfestspiel"..

Wagner's Parsifal is a monumentally rich, layered and harmonious opera. Clearly influenced by Schopenhauer and Buddhism it swirls, hovers and glows over themes of desire, renunciation, compassion and enlightenment. The opera's setting is the medieval Christian romances of the grail knights. The psychological depth created through the interplay of symbolism and narrative amazes me... and then there is the music.
The harmoniousness and consistency of the work leaves me astounded.
Wagner regarded it is as the triumphal culmination of his life's work.

Good conducting, interesting production, fantastic singing and well acted.

I was particularly impressed with John Tomlinson who subtlety and touchingly expressed Gurnemanz's misunderstanding of every situation.




I originally downloaded this from a different site as VOB files (thanks). I have converted it into a handy mkv file. I think this was originally recorded onto a DVD-R from Swiss TV, hence the French hard-subtitles. I have included synchronised srt subtitles in English, German, Spanish and French (slightly different translation to the French hard-subs). To cover over the hard-subs with the srt-subs set your media player to give subtitles an opaque background. These subtitles were originally ripped from another production of Parsifal and then laboriously synchronised to this production.
