Description

PAUL BOWLES (1910-1999) was an American expatriate author, translator and composer whose novels and short stories recount violent events and psychological collapse in a detached and elegant style. His protagonists are often Europeans or Americans who are maimed by their contact with powerful traditional cultures. In awarding him the annual Rea Award for the Short Story in 1991, the jury stated: "Bowles is a storyteller of the utmost purity and integrity. He writes of a world before God became man; a world in which men and women in extremis are seen as components in a larger, more elemental drama. His prose is crystalline and his voice unique."

In 1947 Bowles and his wife, writer Jane Bowles, settled in Tangier, Morocco, a city that became his most potent source of inspiration and where he lived the rest of his life. There he wrote his first novel, THE SHELTERING SKY (1949), a harsh tale of death, rape, and sexual obsession that follows three Americans as they journey through the Algerian desert. The book became was both a popular and critical success — Tennessee Williams wrote that it was like a summer thunderstorm, "pulsing with interior flashes of fire" — and made Bowles a leading figure in the city's expatriate artistic community. LET IT COME DOWN (1952), his second novel, is set in Tangier and explores the disintegration of an American who is unprepared for his encounter with an alien culture. THE SPIDER'S HOUSE (1955), set in Fez immediately prior to Morocco's gaining independence in 1956, marked a departure from his earlier fiction in that it introduced a contemporary political theme, the conflict between Moroccan nationalism and French colonialism.

His short stories are orchestral in composition and exacting in theme, marked by a unique, delicately spare style and a dark, rich, exotic mood, by turns chilling, ironic, and wry. As in his novels, fate is an inexorable element of these distant landscapes, and its psychological effects on his characters are rendered with penetrating accuracy. Included here are some of Bowles's most famous works, including "The Delicate Prey," a grimly satisfying tale of vengeance, and "A Distant Episode," which Tennessee Williams proclaimed "a masterpiece."

The essays in TRAVELS (2011) span more than sixty years and range from Bowles’s early days in Paris to his time spent in Ceylon, Thailand, Kenya, and his expatriate life in Morocco. Insightful, exciting, and evocative, featuring original photographs throughout, it is a stunning collection of rarely seen shorter works. WITHOUT STOPPING (1972) and DAYS: TANGIER JOURNAL (1990) are autobiographical accounts, offering powerful insights into his life, his writing, and his world. IN TOUCH (1994) is an extraordinary collection of letters spanning eight decades and provides a rare look at the many aspects of his brilliant career—as composer, novelist, short-story master, travel writer, translator, ethnographer, and literary critic.

In the 1960s Bowles began translating and collecting stories from the oral tradition of native Moroccan storytellers. His most noteworthy collaborators included Mohammed Mrabet (uploaded as a separate torrent), Driss Ben Hamed Charhadi (Larbi Layachi), and Mohamed Choukri. He also translated writers whose original work was written in Spanish, Portuguese and French.
