Pieta Brown is an American musician and singer-songwriter who has released five critically acclaimed albums and three EPs in the last decade. She has performed with artists such as Mark Knopfler, John Prine, Amos Lee and Calexico. In addition, Brown has shared stages with JJ Cale, Emmylou Harris, Richard Thompson, Ani DiFranco, Calexico, Neko Case, Mason Jennings, Shawn Mullins, Carrie Rodriguez and Jim Lauderdale.
Brown was born in Iowa City, Iowa in 1973, the daughter of two preachers' kids. Her early upbringing in Iowa was in a rural outpost with no furnace or running water. There, Brown was exposed to traditional and rural folk music through her father, singer songwriter Greg Brown. Brown spent her childhood living in 17 different residences between Iowa and Alabama. While living with her mother in Alabama, Brown began writing poetry and composing instrumental songs on piano.
Mercury is her fifth studio album released in the Fall of 2011. With her mesmerizing melodies and seductive voice she delivers a powerful album. Inspired by a dream, Mercury was recorded in the country west of Nashville in a one room studio with a who's who of session players including Grammy-winning producer/player Richard Bennett (Mark Knopfler, Steve Earle, Emmylou Harris), bassist Glenn Worf (Mark Knopfler, Aaron Neville, Tammy Wynette), drummer Chad Cromwell (Neil Young, Mark Knopfler), multi-instrumentalist David Mansfield (Bob Dylan, T-Bone Burnett, Johnny Cash) and her frequent collaborator Bo Ramsey (Lucinda Williams, Greg Brown). Mark Knopfler also adds his inimitable touch to the blues stomp "So Many Miles."
Piecing together torn scraps of love and loss, coming and going, addiction and sobriety, nature and destruction, Pieta proves that she is "one of the best modern songwriters" (Sonic Boomers) and a true poet, speaking to life in these uncertain times.
