Summary:

Life is very pleasant for the close-knit Freeling family until a host of otherworldly forces invades their peaceful suburban home. It starts with just an odd occurrence or two, but soon their house is transformed into a swirling supernatural sideshow. The forces at work are anything but friendly, and if the luckless Freelings don't clear out soon, they'll all be swept off into nightmarish chaos!

Note : The director of Texas Chain Saw making a family-friendly(ish) fantasy horror movie about a haunted house? It happened, folks. And while a lot of evil tongues want to claim that it was in fact writer-producer Spielberg who directed a lot of this, Spielberg insists Hooper did the work, although there's no doubt Spielberg was on set a lot, and his fingerprints are all over it. It's a tightly scripted affair with that quick, efficient characterization that Spielberg and friends were so good at in the late 70s and early 80s, with a solid portion of humor, and quite a bit of new-agey spiritual woo. It's not exactly full of scares, but there are some good freaky sequences, especially towards the end, and maybe especially for younger viewers. Most of all, it's just a very solid piece of horror entertainment. Cast is generally good, at least the adults, from JoBeth Williams and Craig T. Nelson as pot-smoking, just trying to get by in Reagan's 80s parents, to Beatrice Straight as the head paranormal investigator, Zelda Rubinstein as medium Tangina, and James Karen, who we remember from The Return of the Living Dead, as the ruthless real estate developer. Child actors occasionally get a bit annoying, but they're all dead from the curse now anyway, so they got what was coming to them. Practical and optical effects are also top-notch.

The Freeling family are living in a suburban California development that father Steve helped build and sell, and their days are amenable, with mother Diane taking care of the three kids. However, small strange events start occurring within the house, and youngest daughter Carol Anne has a habit of talking to the TV when there's only static on. After a strangely localized earthquake, the events intensify, with objects moving and breaking on their own, and when a tree crashes through the window and seemingly grabs middle child Robbie, trying to devour him before it gets pulled into the sky in a freak tornado, Carol Anne disappears mysteriously from her bedroom. A group of paranormal investigators are called in, and they diagnose the problem as poltergeist activity, while Carol Anne's voice can be heard from the TV, and the family must fight to get their daughter back.

This is an excellent 4k remaster, good color and contrast, well-managed grain, clean and sharp, nothing to complain about. Sound is also good, too bad about the lack of commentary tracks, but at least there are subtitles for days.
