Proxima, film diretto da Alice Winocour, racconta la storia di Sarah (Eva Green), un'astronauta che sta seguendo un periodo di formazione nell'Agenzia spaziale di Colonia per prepararsi a una dura missione: soggiornare un anno intero a bordo della Stazione Spaziale Internazionale. Ma la sua professione si scontrerà con il suo essere madre di una bimba di otto anni, Stella (Zélie Boulant); le due, infatti, non trascorrono molto tempo insieme e l'imminente partenza di Sarah per lo spazio amplifica le difficoltà, già presenti, nel loro rapporto.
Nel cast del film anche Matt Dillon nei panni di Mike, astronauta maschilista, incerto sulle abilità di Sarah e sulla sua presenza a bordo della navicella, essendo lei l'unica donna; Lars Eidinger interpreta Thomas, il padre di Stella, e, infine, Sandra Hüller è Wendy, la psicologa che segue madre e figlia per aiutarle a gestire la partenza di Sarah.
