Note : Julia Ducourneau's breakthrough feature played at Cannes, but it's not as arty as you might suspect. A fairly straightforward story about desire, hunger, and how it shapes people, it's simple structurally, but hard to watch, with extremely realistic body horror and gore, and a pretty nasty attitude. There's an explanation of sorts at the end, but up until then, it's a journey out of control, into pure primal craving and devouring, and it works very well, carried in large part by the very strong performances. Also, if this is the reality of the culture at French universities, it's a marvel that anyone would want to  seek higher education there at all, because holy shit.

Justine is a strict vegetarian, like her family, and also like her family, she's going to study to be a veterinarian. However, the hazing rituals at her new university are harsh, involving eating raw organ meats, and her older sister, who's also at the university, is not much help. Eating meat triggers some sort of craving in Justine, and she gradually starts wanting more, eating both raw meat out of the fridge, kebabs at a truck stop, and then later, after a weird accident, a severed human finger, and she doesn't seem to want to stop. Her sister, it's revealed, has the same addiction, although more under control, and as Justine spirals and university culture takes its toll, it's hard to know where it's going to end up...

As with most new, digitally shot films, this looks pretty great, little grain, tack-sharp details, and great contrast and color. The cinematography is quite nice too, so all in all it's a pleasant visual experience, except for all the cannibalism. 5.1 track sounds good, lots of subtitles if you need them.
