[size=10pt]Ray Charles Robinson nasce ad Albany, Georgia il 23 settembre del 1930. Inizia fin da piccolo a cantare in chiesa ma intorno ai cinque anni accusa gravi problemi alla vista, che nel giro di pochi mesi lo porteranno alla cecità.
"The genius", come viene ribattezzato da chi lo conosce bene fin dai suoi esordi, crea il suo primo gruppo, il "McSon Trio" nel 1947, sullo stile del celebre "Nat King Cole trio".
Ray Charles non poteva che ispirarsi a questo gigante della musica, colui che da più parti viene indicato come il vero apripista della musica soul, autore di canzoni memorabili come "I got the woman" o "Unforgettable". Tutti brani che dimostrano come King Cole riuscì a trasformare la musica gospel (di tradizione fondamentalmente religiosa), in qualcosa di laico ma di altrettanto spirituale.
Tutti aspetti che hanno influenzato profondamente l'evoluzione artistica di "The genius" che, grazie al suo grande talento vocale, riusciva a trasformare qualsiasi canzone (che fosse blues, pop o country), in un'esperienza intima e interiore.
