In de tijd van Victoriaanse Engeland leeft Sara Crewe (Shirley Temple) bij haar vader die reeds weduwnaar is.
Hij wordt opgeroepen ter dienst om naar de oorlog te gaan en Sara wordt in een kostschool ondergebracht.
Na enige tijd volgt het trieste bericht dat haar vader omgekomen is en Sara is ontroostbaar.
Het hoofd van haar school heeft kwade bedoelingen met de kleine Sara en zet haar in als hulpje voor de meest onmogelijke klussen.
Sara draagt haar lot zwijgzaam en met waarde. Als blijkt dat haar vader niet omgekomen is en in een zware oorlogsshock terugkeert naar huis verandert haar leven.
