Sonny Boy Williamson - Down and Out Blues (1959)
Down and Out Blues is the first LP record by American blues musician Sonny Boy Williamson (real name Rice Miller). The album was released in 1959 by Checker Records (Checker Records started in 1952 as a subsidiary to Chess Records in Chicago, Illinois, releasing primarily black artists doing blues and r&b). The album was a compilation of Sonny Boy's first singles for Checker, and features many famous blues musicians backing Sonny including Muddy Waters, Otis Spann, and Willie Dixon.
Sonny Boy Williamson and his songs have had a profound influence on the creation of modern day blues and blues rock. The cuts on this album, although recorded over 50 years ago, are just as wonderful to listen to today as they were long ago. Giving credit where credit is due, Williamson's tunes will be very familiar to those who are fans of the blues/rock genre, as is shown by the number of them that have been covered by well known artists, such as:
