Recent years have seen a substantial increase in the use of composite construction and an enhanced research effort aimed at developing techniques for combining steel and concrete effectively. Composite construction has several advantages over the traditional reinforced concrete or steel structures: these include high strength-to-weight ratios, structural integrity, durable finishes, dimensional stability and sound absorption. From the point of view of structural performance, composite construction results in an efficient design, achieved by the most suitable arrangement of the highly stressed elements in a structure; significant economies of cost and construction time have been observed especially in building floors and bridges by employing this form of construction. The associated technology is in a continuing state of development on account of the potential for improvements in the cost-effectiveness of this form of building. Codes of Practices on Composite Construction are being revised in the UK and in Europe, based on the substantial amount of new knowledge gained as a result of studies in recent years.
