Description

Stone Poneys Discography

The Stone Poneys were a folk-rock trio formed in Los Angeles, consisting of Bob Kimmel (rhythm guitar and vocals), Kenny Edwards (lead guitar and vocals), and Linda Ronstadt (vocals). Their recordings include Linda Ronstadt's first hit song, a cover of Mike Nesmith's "Different Drum". Even at this early stage, Ronstadt was already showcasing her highly expressive performance of an eclectic mix of songs, often from under-appreciated songwriters, requiring a wide array of backing musicians.

The Stone Poneys

The Stone Poneys is the debut studio album by the Stone Poneys, released in January 1967. Other than an early single of "So Fine" that was produced in 1965, this album marks the first official recordings by Linda Ronstadt.

The Stone Poneys Tracklist:
1. "Sweet Summer Blue and Gold" (Bob Kimmel/Ken Edwards) – 2:18
2. "If I Were You" (Kimmel/Edwards) – 1:58

4. "Bicycle Song" (Kimmel/Edwards) – 1;53

Evergreen, Volume 2

Evergreen, Volume 2 is the second album from the Stone Poneys that was released five months after The Stone Poneys. The volume number is a reference to this being the band's second album. Unlike the first album, Linda Ronstadt was the lead vocalist on almost all songs, with only occasional harmony vocals. The exception is the title song, "Evergreen" (which was also the flip side of the first single from the album); Kenny Edwards sang lead on "Part One", while "Part Two" is an instrumental. Both parts have a psychedelic rock feel and feature fine sitar playing (also by Edwards).
The album is notable for the appearance of the band's hit song, "Different Drum"; the song was written by Mike Nesmith prior to his joining the Monkees.

Evergreen, Volume 2 Tracklist:
1. "December Dream" (John Braheny) – 3:30
2. "Song About the Rain" (Steve Gillette) – 2:40
3. "Autumn Afternoon" (Ken Edwards/Bob Kimmel) – 2:35
4. "I've Got to Know" (Pamela Polland) – 2:38
5. "Evergreen (Part One)" (Edwards/Kimmel) – 3:10
6. "Evergreen (Part Two)" (Edwards/Kimmel) – 3:33, instrumental
7. "Different Drum" (Mike Nesmith) – 2:45
8. "Driftin'" (Edwards/Kimmel) – 2:30
9. "One For One" (Al Silverman/Austin DeLone) – 2:50
10. "Back On The Street Again" (Steve Gillette) – 1:50
11. "Toys In Time" (Edwards/Kimmel) – 1:50
12. "New Hard Times" (Mayne Smith/Kimmel) – 3:00

Linda Ronstadt, Stone Poneys and Friends, Vol. III

Their third album was titled Linda Ronstadt, Stone Poneys and Friends, Vol. III (released April 1968), and only her picture was on the cover. It included another Nesmith song, Some of Shelly's Blues, and ended with the Laura Nyro song, Stoney End, which turned out to have a prophetic title. By then, Linda Ronstadt had become at least as well known as the band following the success of Different Drum, and she was off on her solo career.

Many of the songs are in more of a country-rock style that would mark her most popular work in later years, rather than the folk-rock music of the first two Stone Poneys albums. This is particularly true of the two songs that were released as singles from this album, "Some of Shelly's Blues" and "Up to My Neck in High Muddy Water"; the latter song reached #93 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart.

Linda Ronstadt, Stone Poneys and Friends, Vol. III Tracklist:
