Il collezionista di carte, film diretto da Paul Schrader, racconta la storia di William Tell (Oscar Isaac), un ex militare dedito al gioco d'azzardo. La sua esistenza, da sempre vissuta nell'ombra, viene sconvolta quando incontra Cirk (Tye Sheridan), un giovane che è in cerca di vendetta. Il ragazzo e William hanno un nemico in comune, un colonnello militare, ma al contrario di Cirk, l'ex soldato non medita vendetta.
Per William l'incontro con il giovane si rivela un'occasione per redimersi e si propone di riformarlo, grazie all'aiuto di una misteriosa finanziatrice, La Linda (Tiffany Haddish). Tell porta Cirk in viaggio con sé e lo introduce nel mondo dei casinò, facendolo partecipare con lui al World Series of poker di Las Vegas, dove l'uomo vuole assolutamente vincere. Ma il ragazzo è troppo arrabbiato per farsi distrarre o condurre sulla retta vita e sarà lui a far ricadere William nel suo oscuro passato, del quale l'uomo non è mai riuscito a liberarsi...
