In de toekomst heeft de zoektocht naar alternatieve brandstoffen geleid tot de ontdekking van de Triffid, een koolachtige plant die een eigen leven lijkt te leiden. Tijdens een wereldwijde zonnestorm worden miljarden mensen blind en komen de Triffids tot leven en ontsnappen ze. De overlevenden moeten nu, onder aanvoering van dr.
