The Fly (1986), directed by David Cronenberg, 20th Century Fox remaster, encoded in 10 bit HEVC with AAC sound, including 5.1 remaster, original theatrical stereo, two commentary tracks, and subtitles in 11 languages.

Video encoded in two-pass 10.5 Mbps x265 10bit with the veryslow preset for archive quality image.

English subtitles OCRed, proofed, and corrected. All other subtitles converted to VobSub and repositioned.

Note : It's my favorite director (well, one of them) David Cronenberg again, with perhaps his most commercial film, certainly the most commercially successful, starring Jeff Goldblum and Geena Davis, a loose remake of the 1958 original, and 100% Cronenberg weird body horror, despite its likeable characters and romantic subplot. The practical effects are top-notch (winning an Oscar for best makeup), the performances are very solid, this being a psychological drama as much as a body horror, and the ending is grotesque and tragic in equal measure. A definite must-see.

Seth Brundle is an eccentric scientist working on a secret project who meets science journalist Ronnie Quaife, and ends up showing her his work, a teleportation machine. When she wants to go public, he convinces her to help him document his work until he's ready to show it to the world, so she can write the book about what is certain to be the scientific breakthrough of the century. The machine has problems teleporting living beings, turning them grotesquely inside out, until Ronnie inspires him to reprogram the control computer to better understand living things, and it successfully teleports a monkey. In the meantime, Seth and Ronnie have started a relationship, but Seth's insecure, and when Ronnie goes off to meet her boss, who's also her ex-boyfriend, to convince him to not go public with the teleportation breakthrough too early, Seth gets drunk and teleports himself. All seems well, but a fly got into the teleporter with Seth, and gradually, the fly's DNA begins effecting changes in his body, at first giving him enhanced strength, stamina, agility, and reflexes, but later changing his mental state and gradually transforming his body into something new.

This is an above-average remaster (although this film really deserves the full 4k treatment), with fairly sharp image, good black levels and color, and fine grain. The 5.1 remaster sounds good, although the original theatrical stereo apparently has a few effects and details that got left out in the remaster. Both commentary tracks are interesting, although I'd personally always choose to listen to Cronenberg, who has a lot of insight and introspection about his own work, in addition to being a very smart guy. Lots of subtitles included, even for the director's commentary.
