Note : I've been waiting for this one for a long time, since it had something of a hidden gem reputation among the gialli, and had also only been available in SD until now. This excellent 4k remaster changes all that, though, and I have to say, it doesn't disappoint, a dread-soaked nightmare of a film, a mixture of rural folk horror, murder mystery, and gothic, with a great lead performance by Lino Capolicchio, whose growing unease is plain to see on his expressive face throughout, backed up by Francesca Marciano, Gianni Cavina, and Eugene Walter. Pupi Avati does it again, and this was definitely worth the wait. If you like giallo at all, you need to see this.

In 1950s Italy, Stefano, a young art restorer, is called to a small rural village to work on a fresco in the local church, portraying the martyrdom of Saint Sebastian. The artist was Legnani, a local painter who went mad and committed suicide several decades earlier. Stefano takes up residence in the house that was previously owned by the painter and his two sisters, and begins a romance with a young schoolteacher, but gradually learns from the townspeople that Legnani was insane, and had painted various scenes of martyrdom from real life. Specifically, Legnani and his sisters tortured people to death so that he could use them as models, and this possibly includes the very painting Stefano's working on. The villagers discourage him from continuing the restoration work, and when several of them are murdered, he suspects someone is trying to keep him from discovering the whole truth.

This is a nice 4k restoration with good contrast, decent detail, and tight but somewhat prominent grain, although the greenish-yellow tint to the whole film is a bit strange. I see that descriptions of earlier versions of the film also refer to this kind of grading, so I think it must be intentional, but it certainly has an unusual look. The mono track sounds fine, sadly no commentary tracks or anything else.
