De enige persoon die alle vier elementen beheerst is de Avatar. Tijdens een aanval van de Vuurnatie verdwijnt de Avatar plotseling.
100 jaar later ontdekken twee kinderen (Katara en Sokka van de Waterstam) een jongen genaamd Aang die zit vastgevroren in een rots.
Hij blijkt de nieuwe Avatar te zijn en hij moet het evenwicht in de wereld weer zien te herstellen. Maar dat is niet geheel zonder gevaar...
