The Looney, Looney, Looney Bugs Bunny Movie (2009)

Looney Tunes reigns king in the land of cartoons. I don’t care if you didn’t grow up with them or haven’t seen more than one or two Bugs Bunny shorts, just know this: all of the cartoon slapstick you’ve ever seen in a cartoon since has its roots in the Looney Tunes. Bugs Bunny has outsmarted more unruly, ill-tempered foes than the best hero. Daffy Duck has had his ambitions shattered more than the most famous “down-on-his-luck” comedian. Porky Pig has struggled valiantly with the same speech impediment and cowardly disposition for decades. The list of “first this” and “the most that” goes on forever. Looney Tunes is cartoon ancestry – and yet it’s timeless. If any cartoon can make the argument that time isn’t linear it’s Looney Tunes. Possessing comedic bits every writer since envies for not having created first, Looney Tunes proves that just because time marches on the past of television comedy remains wholly relevant.
The premise of The Looney, Looney, Looney Bugs Bunny Movie centers on a loose story of Yosemite Sam trying to find someone else to take his place in Hell which seems more morbid than it is – but the concept of death has to be discussed in depth in Looney Tunes at some point. When you cram characters’ mouths full of dynamite at some point mortality is going to come into question. The movie does that, but from a more spiritual win/lose perspective. Will Yosemite Sam be sentenced to Hell forever? Or will he take the rabbit or some other beloved Looney Tunes character down instead?
While labeled as a “movie” The Looney, Looney, Looney Bugs Bunny Movie knows what it is and how it needs to be structured to succeed. Or rather Friz Freleng, the maestro behind some of Looney Tunes’ best shorts, knows this. Freleng’s hand directs shorts starring a majority of the cartoon’s beloved cast and creates a movie that reminds the world why Looney Tunes is a cultural landmark.
I may be partial to the first segment, which features a lengthy procedure of Bugs outsmarting Yosemite over and over and over and over – but that doesn’t mean the rest is without any less merit. I can’t claim to find the Pepe Le Pew moments too comical, but Foghorn Leghorn’s chicken coop antics still have some of the best attitude the cartoon world has even known. This is classic animation. If you can get of your Pixar-rendered high horse for 80 minutes you’re sure to have a helluva great time with Bugs and crew.
DVD Bonus Features
Okay, so let’s get the generic subtitle and audio languages out of the way – the disc has them. Even more impressive than standard technical extras are the three animated shorts. The inclusion of the extra three animated shorts seems odd and perfect all at once. Warner Brothers has been including classic Looney Tunes segments on the rereleases of its vintage classics for a little while now and so it only seems right they’d do so on this one – even if the main feature itself feels like four shorts pasted together. What separates these extra shorts from the main feature is the tried and true quality of each: Box Office Bunny, From Hare to Eternity and Pullet Surprise round out the disc’s offerings. However, Box Office Bunny is the one that pushes the collection over the edge for me. I remember seeing Box Office Bunny as a kid but seeing it again now brings a whole new level of appreciation for it and its lampooning of the film-going experience.
