A World War II widow seeks to adjust to life in postwar Germany.

Maria Braun to matka-Niemka, symbol odradzających się z gruzów Niemiec, upadłej godności narodowej,
szukającej ratunku w odbudowie ekonomii. Jej małżeństwo trwało jeden dzień i dwie noce, później utraciła
męża na długie lata. Mąż poszedł na front wschodni, później znalazł się w sowieckim łagrze. Maria została
sama. Maria Braun zdaje się ucieleśniać okres najgłębszego upodlenia Niemców tuż po wojnie na skutek
zniszczeń, nędzy i głodu, okres dewaluacji wszelkich wartości, także kulturalnych oraz moralnych. Maria
nie jest zła ani zepsuta, po prostu chce przeżyć i doczekać powrotu swego Hermanna. Jednak raz złamane zasady
etyczne prowadzą do postępującej deprawacji.
